Research Topic

For our Research Project I decided to write about Joyce Maynard, her life in memoirs and articles focusing on her relationship with men. I will also be talking about gender roles in general, and especially focusing on the second feminist movement (and maybe the radical feminism from the 70's) which was from the early 1960's to the late 1980's. I'm hoping to discuss how Maynard, a successful author and famous woman, was controlled by men during a time when most women were trying to gain equality (ie: employment discrimination based on sex.)

Hey I'm from the other UW class. Although I don't really know who your topic is, it sounds like you are pretty interested in her, which is definitely a plus. I think you should use the Women's Studies lens or the historical lens for the paper, or both. For databases, when I typed in Joyce Maynard in Academic Search Premiere and Proquest, 107 and 139 articles came up, respectively. The one i thought was the best one was the first article of Proquest, "Are you the jealous type?" It's written by Maynard, so there you have a primary source. Good luck with your paper.

First off, good job on your presentation! But ok, so to the notes I took from the discussion in class! You should probably watch ‘In A League of Their Own.” It may give you more ideas for your paper, but even if you decide not to use it, it’s a great movie and you seem to be interested in this topic anyways.

So in your questions you used ‘view of women in sports’. You should try to make this more defined, so the view of women in sports compared with men, the view of women who play soccer, etc. In your question you also use ‘portray’, same thing just try to define this more. You could say portray through the media (over sexualizing women athletes, you could use Anna Kornikova as an example). You could even decide to use her blog, or blogs of other women athletes if you decided to go down this path. Their blogs could be great primary resources (and they’re all considered women’s autobiographies!)

For your Lit Review you could talk about how not enough change has happened in women’s roles. You could say how others have said there has been great improvements in equality for both men and women, but then you could go on to discuss how not enough has happened. With this though, you need to make sure you stick with autobiographies so that you’re paper is related to our course more than being like a history report. You could use one players autobiography and go on to talk about her individual frustrations and what still needs to change for men and women roles to be more equal in sports. To help with some proof ideas, you could get stats from different women or teams and compare that with stats from men’s teams, sort of to prove that they’re just as good, but with less money and less fame.

The main issues with you paper, like I mentioned before one of them is making sure you relate it to our class. Other than that, the movie you were talking about, you’ll have to see who wrote it/directed it to see if it’s autobiographical. You could also make your topic easier for you by making it less broad. You could choose a specific player to apply to your research question.

For one last resource, Dr. Smith said you might want to check out Sports Illustrated because they have some articles you might be able to use that are autobiographical, but you’ll have to search around.

Hope my note taking skills were good enough for you!! Good luck! =D

Hey there. here are some of the notes i took down in class for you. There actually weren't took many; your question was pretty well done as it was, but here you go:

-discuss the two feminist arguments [your first two points... feminism and abortion?] and see how they overlap
-for your third point, talk about the divorce and custody battle to tie the points together more
-they're "hot topics" in the media... [that is one way they're all tied together]

good luck!
